Wow! You really can create animations! But read this for input device recommendation

I was skeptical that an entry-level product would really allow me to create animations, but Anime Studio delivers the goods. It's a powerful product, with a clean upgrade path to it's big brother. But it will be a very long time before I grow out of this one.

Here are my favorite features:

Motion Tracking: you can open a motion video (a camcorder video, for example), mark an object in the video, and Anime Studio will track that object through multiple frames. You can then use this marker to attach one of your animations. Imagine the possibilities: Animated characters can dance with your children on video-all you have to do is animate the character, then attach the animated character to your child in the video. Cool!

Lip Syncing: You can sync a characters lip movements to audio easily. This is pretty hard to do manually. Anime Studio has a command to take care of it. So the character dancing with your child can sing too!

Lots of Import options, including Photoshop. Anime Studio preserves Photoshop layers, which saves lots of time if you use Photoshop.

Finally, keep in mind that animations are not necessarily cartoons. Anytime you need a picture or text to move in a complex way on top of or below other pictures, you are doing animation. So there are business applications too (think product instructional videos with animations of parts interacting with other parts, with hatches opening and latches latching...you get the idea).

OK, now for my input device recommendation: Anime Studio has good drawing tools. Lots of animation work requires precise placement of points, drawing of paths, etc. You really want to use a tablet. The WACOM CTE450K Black Bamboo Fun Tablet with Pen, Mouse & Graphics Software (NEW) is a perfect match for Anime Studio. It comes with both a mouse and pen, plus some great software. You can use Anime Studio with a mouse, but a pen tablet makes life easier and more fun.

Highly recommended, especially given the low price.

Ok...but could be better

Bought this software for my 12 year old son who likes cartooning, he was able to start drawing images using the tools available,however has yet to transition to actually fuly mobilizing the animation. He has a 40 page instruction manual he needs to follow and the introductory online lessons weren't very helpful. Anime needs to make the software through more user friendly.

Let's get this out front: you aren't going to recreate some late-night sci-fi anime classic you've always adored. This is a wonderful program whose purpose is to get you started in anime. The character choices are good, and the options on the program do allow a certain amount of freedom. If this truly were a "from the ground-up" kind of creation program you'd need forever to learn how to use it, but this one has only a minor learning curve before you begin creating some fun animation you can enjoy. My son was interested in possibly getting into animation for a career after high school, and this was a wonderful choice to help him get a feel for what was ahead.

I got this program on a lark, thinking it might be fun to try my hand at animation. I am a novice at such things, although a long time ago I sat down with a professional program (Maya) with a professional animator at my side to see how this stuff is done...I found that really tough going, even with an expert beside me.

This...not so tough. Well, not so tough to start. To do anything of value? Well, it's still going to be time-consuming. I was able to use some canned shortcuts to get a few cute animations to work. I could see where, with patience, I could really do something of value with this, and I could see the pathway to get there. But then life's other duties called and my interest in spending days/weeks really doing things right waned.

But the interface is intuitive and straightforward, and--key for this type of software--it offers multiple layers. For the novice, there are canned shortcuts to get _something_ "on paper", which you can then manipulate and fix up to your heart's content. For the expert, there are a lot of options beneath the surface to really do something of value and semi-professional quality. This is the way a software package like this should be designed. They get an A on this.

Where this program falls down is with respect to help. There isn't much contextual help available, and you wind up having to refer to a .pdf manual, which is unfortunately both increasingly common, and horrible: It takes you "out of the moment", it requires opening multiple windows on the PC desktop, etc. Not good. When version 7 of this program appears, I would hope they'd attempt to better integrate help into the program itself. I will say that the manual is reasonably well written. But on a deep program like this, contextual help inside the program is really a necessity, not a feature.

Overall, a good program for those who have an interest in digital animation. But unless you have a lot of time to devote to that goal, or unless you're already an expert, you may find this one of those things that seems more useful at the time of purchase than it subsequently proves to be.

A final note: Others have suggested that this would be perfect for teenaged kids. I agree: They have the time to devote to something like this, and it would be much preferable to mastering another video game!

Not for beginners

The Anime Studio packaging makes one think the product is geared toward children or beginners. As a beginner, I can testify that this is not the case. I'm a software engineer. When I write software and design GUIs (Graphical User Interfaces), every function must be immediately obvious to even the most casual observer or have context sensitive help or both. This software would NOT have made it to production where I work.

I still have not figured much of this out. If I wanted to sit and go through long tutorials and read and study and try things for hours on end, then I could probably be productive with this. However, If you don't want to make a large time investment, this is not for you.
